Human remains found on Cypress belong to British tourist missing for 2.5 years

Human remains found on Cypress Mountain in April belong to a British tourist who has been missing for more than two years, according to the BC Coroners Service.

Tom Billings, 22, had been missing since 2013 and was last seen hiking the North Shore mountains on November 25 of that year. He was reported missing a week later after he didn’t return home to Oxford, England. Billings had spent two months travelling North America.

No trace of Billings was found after a large-scale search.

On April 11, 2016, a hiker on Cypress Mountain spotted human remains and called the police. North Shore Search and Rescue returned to the spot days later and finished the recovery mission.

The Vancouver Police Department says they notified Billings’ family in a two-hour long phone conversation and released a statement thanking the North Shore Search and Rescue team and the staff members at the British consulate in Vancouver.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating the cause of his death. Foul play isn’t suspected.
