Na, na, na, na nanana naaah. Nanananaaa, Hey Jude… I mean, Hey Lou.
It has been just over a week since the Vancouver Canucks returned goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers. Many fans are lamenting the loss of the greatest goaltender in the team’s history, a player who gave the franchise new momentum after the fall of the West Coast Express and was singlehandedly responsible for carrying the team into the playoffs over several occasions.
Under Luongo’s watch, the Canucks witnessed their most successful period in history: six division titles, two Presidents’ Trophies, and one win away from the Stanley Cup.
And of course, there was also Luongo’s personality – an understated, humble character who also had a great sense of humour (see Luongo’s Twitter).
These lyrics from the brilliant parody of the Beatles’ classic “Hey Jude” sum up what we’re feeling here:
…And if you’re feelin’ any pain.
Hey Lu, no shame. You carried our team upon your shoulders.
For we all know that it’s a tool
Who blames lost games on only one-single player.
La, da, da, da, daah, da, da, da, daaaaaaaa.
Hey Lu, don’t feel let down.
Van should have been much nicer to you.
Remember you’d always be in our heart
When you would start
As our goaltender…
