Imagine feeling totally disconnected to those around you, your oldest friends, and even your family, out of the blue. But it doesn’t happen just once. It gradually keeps happening until you’re feeling lost almost all of the time.
This is how someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can feel. There’s no cure for this disease at present and it can affect anyone, from any walk of life. It’s estimated that more than 70,000 of BC residents are living with it.
Now there’s something that you can do to help. On Sunday, May 6 you can join fellow Vancouverites in the Investors Group Walk For Alzheimer’s. It’s a five-kilometre walk departing from Athletes Way which you can join as an individual participant, as part of a team, or donate if you can’t make it.
Vancouver will be one of 23 locations across the province uniting for the Investors Group Walk For Alzheimer’s – Canada’s biggest fundraising event for the disease and other dementias.
It’s a fun, family-friendly event where you can make new memories with your loved ones while raising awareness of the disease and supporting those affected. And all funds raised at the Vancouver Walk will contribute to local support and education programs, as well as helping enable research into the causes of and cure for the disease.
In 2017, more than 5,200 people participated in the Walk events throughout BC – raising over $747,000 in total.
The event is a way to come together and celebrate the contribution that those living with dementia make to our lives. And it’s one step closer to the Alzheimer Society of BC’s vision of a dementia-friendly society.
Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s chair, Monica Wallani, told Daily Hive: “I love being a part of the Walk because it’s a great way to be involved with the community. It also reminds me that there is a tremendous amount of support for those who are on the dementia journey and that we are not alone.”
