Report: These are all of the sunscreens officially approved by Health Canada

Last summer, Banana Boat sunscreen products went under fire after a number of mother’s complained their children suffered burn injuries after using the brand’s sunscreens.

Because of this, Health Canada tested a number of Banana Boat sunscreen products and reviewed testing conducted by the company that manufactures these products.

Not only did the federal department not find any serious concerns with product quality, they learned the products contained the medicinal ingredients that were listed on the label in the correct amounts.

But Health Canada didn’t stop there. Given the high number of sunscreen complaints in 2017, it tested a broader range of sunscreen brands.

In total, Health Canada says it tested 27 different types of sunscreen, 18 intended for children or infants and nine for adults.

The testing focused on the types of sunscreens that were associated with the adverse events reported to Health Canada and in the media in the past year.

Health Canada has now released its report, which reveals it didn’t identify any serious concerns with the quality of any of the products.

The products tested showed:

  • All products were found to have a pH range close to the skin’s natural pH level.
  • All products contained the amount of active ingredient that was listed on the product label.
  • None of the products contained the preservatives known to cause skin reactions including methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone.
  • None of the products contained microbial contaminants above allowable levels.

Health Canada says it strongly encourages the use of sunscreens to protect against harmful UV radiation, which can lead to burns, premature ageing, and skin cancer.

“Although reactions observed are not the result of product quality issues, other factors that could have contributed to the reported reactions are under review,” said Health Canada.
