The friends over at Sesame Street are moving into a new home next fall.

This morning it was announced that we will be seeing five more seasons of Sesame Street on HBO and its multiplex channels. The partnership was struck between the television network and Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind the Emmy Award-winning show.

New episodes will be aired as early as this fall, as the original episodes will continue to air on PBS uninterrupted. After a six-month time frame, PBS will acquire the new episodes.

“Over the past decade, both the way in which children are consuming video and the economics of the children’s television production business have changed dramatically,” said Joan Ganz Cooney, co-founder of Sesame Street.

“In order to fund our nonprofit mission with a sustainable business model, Sesame Workshop must recognize these changes and adapt to the times.”

Sadly, Sesame Street will not be viewable on HBO Canada. However, it is no secret that many Canadians can easily access the American networks of Netflix and HBO.

HBO will also be picking up two acclaimed children’s series: Pinky Dinky Doo, an animated series for preschoolers that focuses on early literacy, and The Electric Company.
