Google creates professional female emojis to reduce gender inequality

Female emojis are pretty lacklustre. From “Information Desk Person” to “Haircut,” the range of available lady emojis can be seen as downright sexist, but Google aims to change that.

In a bid to reduce gender inequality, Google is proposing a range of 13 professional female emojis in business, healthcare, science, and education related fields, among others.

Professions were selected based on job growth in certain fields, gender-specific studies, and a recent push within popular culture to represent more women in science, technology, and math.

“…we believe we can have a larger positive impact by adding 13 new emoji that depict women across a representative sample of professions. We believe this will empower young women (the heaviest emoji users), and better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world,” reads a release from Google.

Google notes that young women are the primary users of emojis – 78% of women are frequent emoji users versus 60% of men.

So what would said professional emojis look like? Take a look at Google’s new emojis below (and don’t worry, gents, there will be boy versions too).
