It might be a little chillier out, but that doesn’t stop Vancouver’s fresh and fun food trucks from rolling out the yummy eats. One of the best places to find the carts and trucks each week are at the city’s winter outposts of the Vancouver Farmers Market, and this month there’s double the deliciousness as part of Food Truck February.
On Saturdays, 11 area food trucks will set up at Nat Bailey Stadium, and Sundays eight trucks will be serving at Hastings Park. Each venue’s array of trucks will offer a tempting range of market-centric eats, including a special February-only item.
This year, the trucks will each make a “Market Jar” item. With an intent to reduce waste, the trucks are getting creative with serving up dishes in a reusable jar with a customized Vancouver Farmers’ Market cozy. Even though the markets and trucks have been focused on creating less food and packaging waste, this is one way to get closer to a zero-waste model. Customers can pick up a jar for $5 at the Food Truck Fest Info Booth inside the market (the cost of the meal is separate). Of course, customers are welcome to bring in their own 500 mL jar, too!
To keep things fun, the VFM is running a few FTF contests for the trucks and the customers. Eaters can cast votes for the People’s Choice for Best Market Jar meal, and honours will be dished out to the trucks that sell the most market jars, as well as the one that’s closest to zero-waste. If you’re the kind who photographs what you eat, get all the deets from the VFM’s FTF page on how to enter their Instagram contest, too.
There’s already one week of Food Truck February under everyone’s belts, but there are still three more weeks of Market Jar eats to come. Look for trucks like The Schnitzel Shack, Le Tigre, Disco Cheetah, Yolk’s Breakfast, Aussie Pie Guy, Kaboom Box, REEL Mac and Cheese and others; a full schedule for each market by week is up on the Vancouver Farmers’ Market website.
