A resident of the small Vancouver Island community of Port Alice is recovering in hospital after receiving a package in the mail which turned out to be an explosive device.

According to Port Alice RCMP, the incident took place on Tuesday, when a mail package was opened by the homeowner.

Police said the man received serious, but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident and was transported to hospital.

The victim’s wife told CHEK News that her husband’s fingertips were “basically blown off” as a result of the incident.

Now, the Port Hardy RCMP, the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, an RCMP Explosives Dog, Campbell River RCMP Forensic Identification Section and RCMP Island District General Investigation Section have all been called in to help investigate the incident. Canada Post is engaged in the investigation as well.

Police believe this was a targeted incident, but have not offered any further details.
