Occupation (optional): Communications Coordinator, Digital Info Channels at Student Communications Services, The University of British Columbia
A notable moment on Twitter? Not really ONE moment, but just all of the little ones where you actually connect with someone around a topic or event. Everyone enjoys the feeling of interacting with real people…right? One on one interactions are significant for me because I think it’s easy to “put on an act” for a large group, but you end up really getting to know someone when it’s just the two of you and some genuine, intelligent, and meaningful conversation.
Your best Tweet: Small personal highlight was when I had my first photo published. It was in the Metro newspaper in a short article on the Blenz Coffee “That Barista Thing” Latte Art Competition.
What did you want to be growing up? Architect – I’d say it’s still in the cards. I did a geology degree and now I work in communications, so I figure anything is possible.
If you could have dinner with 1 person (live or dead) who would it be? Well, it’s a toss up between my love of photography and my love of Formula 1 racing…but I’m going to go with photography this time. I’d like to get a chance to chat with Chase Jarvis – he’s a prominent photographer from Seattle, WA and he’s gained a lot of traction for really pushing the idea that, “the best camera is the one that’s with you.” I’d like to pick his brain on the creative process and how he finds inspiration to do what he does. If anyone out there has any connections and could help me pull this off – let me know!
Your claim to fame: I’m the guy that gets pulled into all sorts of (seemingly) random tech/creative projects in and outside of work – my involvement is generally preceded by, “Oh, Jamil might know something about that.” I certainly don’t think that I “know-it-all” but I like to chalk it up to really being able to connect with people, working on projects that I’m passionate about, and delivering results.
Do you know of a hidden gem in our city? The very North end of Alma street – there’s this really nice view of the city and the mountains. It’s a really great place for a walk on a warm summer night and I think there are stairs somewhere close by that go down to the water.
If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?
Optimus Prime – because then I could say all the cheesy Transformers lines from the 80’s and not feel like a dork. Autobots…roll out!
If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?
Broccoli – It’s good for you and people pretend to be dinosaurs or giraffes when you are put on their plates. Imagination is awesome.
Recommend a fellow Twitterer that deserves some recognition?
@alittlemoregood – it’s the brainchild of Katie Jeanes (she’s pretty darn fantastic) and they’re promoting social good in and around Vancouver…and beyond! The ‘More Good in the Hood’ Guide for Do-Gooders is a personal favourite and I also have a tonne of fun shooting photos and helping make videos for them. Check it out www.alittlemoregood.com!
