A brazen thief who posed as a building contractor at the Body Energy Club location in City Square Mall was caught on CCTV stealing a MacBook laptop from the store.

“He said there was a leak in Fitness World and he needed to check to see if we were affected,” Body Energy Club co-founder Rick Bennett told Vancity Buzz. “He had a whole song and dance prepared and after watching the video it’s clear he had been casing the store for some time.”

The incident occurred on Friday and it is believed that he knew the staff routine. Video footage indicates the suspect, who was wearing an orange vest, had his eye on the till but the laptop was a more convenient target. When staff were out of sight from the counter, he made his way out of the store with the laptop in his hands.

“He lured the staff away from the till then snagged it after realizing that stealing the till would be less discrete.”

Bennett runs four store locations and much of his routine, both personal and business, revolves around what is stored in the laptop. He adds that he does not want this to happen to anyone else.

If you recognize the man in the surveillance footage, you are asked to contact any Body Energy Club location at 604-697-0466 or the Vancouver Police Department’s non-emergency hotline at 604-717-3321.
