Following the accusations of Cambridge Analytica improperly using personal data from Facebook users around the world, Facebook has stated that they estimate a total of 87 million people may have had their data shared with the IT company.

The total number comes after Facebook released an update on their plans to restrict data access on Wednesday, which includes App Control, a function allowing users to see what information they are sharing with their apps.

In an email to Daily Hive from Facebook, the company stated that they believe 0.7% of affected users were Canadian, meaning that an estimated 622,161 Canadians may have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica.

“We estimate the number of Canadians impacted to be 622,161 (0.7% of people impacted globally),” the email reads.

The company also stated that the vast majority of users affected – 82 million of the 87 million total – were located in the US.

Facebook will also be telling users if they were one of the profiles that may have had their data improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica, starting on Monday, April 9, when the App Control function rolls out.
