Montreal-based dollar store retailer Dollarama is planning a major expansion by opening 150 additional locations over the next two years.

Most of the new stores will be in Ontario and in Western Canada and will bring the company’s total number of stores to about 400.

Another major dollar store in downtown Vancouver is likely given that the oddly placed Dollar Tree store at Alberni and Robson closed its doors to make way for a new high-end retailer. There are no current plans to open up another Dollar Tree store, however, this could leave market share room for another Dollarama in the city core.

Within the City of Vancouver, there are six Dollarama locations including three in downtown Vancouver. The market for dollar stores has considerably grown to attract even the middle class and well-off shoppers who are looking for convenient and low-cost procurement.

In 2012, Dollarama expanded its selection to include items that cost more than a dollar – items that cost $2, $2.50 and $3.
