Vancouver has been selected as the host city of a major international conference on environmentally-friendly cities and sustainability.

According to a release, the city will hold the ECOCITY World Summit at the Vancouver Convention Centre in October 2019, which is expected to attract over 1,000 thought-leaders, decision makers, sustainable business owners, and green researchers from over 30 countries.

The theme of the Vancouver conference is “Socially Just and Sustainable Cities” in a bid to address complex challenges facing rapidly growing urban areas.

The announcement was made today at the conclusion of this year’s conference held in Melbourne, Australia. BCIT will be organizing the event.

Since the inaugural conference in 1990, the ECOCITY Summit series is held in a different global city every two years. The last time the event was held in Canada was in 2011 in Montreal.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Trudeau named Vancouver as the host for the Women Deliver Conference, which will be held in June 2019.
