Start the Dragon Boat Festival in style at the 5th annual Legacy Gala

Jun 15 2017, 11:34 pm

The Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival is almost here and it’s hosting a slew of events that you’ll want to check out.

One of these is the fifth annual Legacy Gala taking place on Friday, June 23 in aid of the Milton K. Wong Legacy Project.

By attending this exclusive event you can help give high school students the chance to join paddling programs, making it possible for more than 800 youth to participate for free in the junior team races among other initiatives. Tickets to the event cost $125 each and you can snap yours up online.

The Legacy Project was established in 2013 by the International Dragon Boat Festival Society to honour philanthropist Wong. And since then, it’s gone on to help kids participate in ‘one time,’ low, or no cost kayaking programs as well as dragon boating.

This year’s Dragon Boat Festival is kicking off on Friday, June 23 filled with action-packed, free events. You can check out the Survivor Showdown, the first race of the festival where teams of cancer survivors will race against each other on the waters of False Creek.

You can also check out the ‘Barrier Free Canada Cup’ on the same day. This race is set to feature eight teams that make it their mission to engage people with challenges and fundraise for their own causes. The best part? You can take in all the action from the standpoint of the finish line.

When you want to take a break from race-watching, you can enjoy one of the many activities and entertainment options being featured at the festival.

See international artists perform on the ‘World Beat Stage’ where there’s something for everyone from reggae, to soul, Spanish guitar, to 60s-inspired sounds.

Or, you can also enjoy a spot of shopping at the Portobello West Market that’s taking place as part of the festival. And if you work up an appetite, you can simply grab a bite at one of the many delicious food vendors onsite.

One thing is for sure – you’ll easily have a great time at this year’s Dragon Boat Festival.
