As part of the Dine Out Vancouver Festival Preview, we headed over to Glowbal Group’s Black and Blue (after Coast) for a tasting of their $38 menu. See the post on Coast’s Dine Out Vancouver Festival Preview. This is a steakhouse so we expected plenty of meat on their menu! I guess that is why our starters were meatless, they were saving it for the main course!
There were two starter choices and we started off with the Truffle Potato Leek Soup. The soup was very rich and creamy, almost like a puree, and the hint of truffle added a nice decadent touch. There was also a bit of chive oil on top, along with some green onions, which served to bring out some of the flavour of the leek.
Another starter option is the Green Goddess Watercress Salad. Also on the plate were some cucumbers, something that looked and tasted like sun-dried tomatoes, but described as preserved tomatoes and a few slices of Parmesan. This was a good salad, but I think the soup was the winner between the two.
Of the three mains, the first one they brought out was the Strip Loin Roast. This is served with a scoop of mashed potatoes and lots of root veggies as well as some crispy onions on top. The meat was cooked rare and, although I tend to like my meat on the rarer side, I found this made the meat a bit too chewy for my liking.
The other meat entree was the Blue Ribbon Cottage Pie. This is an elevated version of a Shepherd’s Pie, made with salt cellar ground Blue Ribbon beef from PEI. The cattle are pasture-fed and raised without any antibiotics or hormones. Along with the ground beef, there were loads of peas and carrots in a rich gravy. All this is then topped with mashed Parmesan potatoes. Richness upon richness…this was really filling, I barely ate half!
There is also a non-meat option, which is the Pan Roasted Salmon, and it was surprisingly good. I would say that it rivaled the Grilled Salmon we tried earlier at Coast. The parsnip puree was a bit bland but the fish more than made up for it. The crispy root chips on top were also a nice touch.
Of the three Add-ons, I managed to try two of them. This is the Creamed Corn, which was outstanding, plump kernels, sitting pretty in the cream and topped with some fried jalapenos. I could have had the whole thing, but alas, we had to share.
Another available add-on was the Lyonnaise Potatoes, and although this was good, it was not as extraordinary as the Creamed Corn. The third add-on, which we didn’t try, is the Steak Fries.
We then headed over to Society for tasting of the desserts. There were Cinnamon Spiced Beer Doughnuts and a Rice Krispy Square topped with peanut butter and chocolate. The square was probably my favourite of the two. I really liked the crunch, although the toppings were really rich.
And finally, to round off an epic night of eating, we had the Sticky Toffee Pudding with some whipped cream on the side. This was rich and definitely meant for sharing!
