Whitecaps' Alphonso Davies can't win 'Man of the Match' because of beer sponsor

What a debut for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Playing their first game of the 2018 MLS season, not only did Whitecaps FC beat Montreal 2-1, but they entertained 27,837 fans at BC Place on Sunday.

A big reason why was the play of young Alphonso Davies, who set up Kei Kamara’s opening goal with a beautiful cross, before scoring a goal of his own that stood up as the game-winner.

It was a wonderful game for Davies. Some might even say he deserved Man of the Match for it. And if he was literally any other player on the pitch, he probably would have.

Not only did Davies not win Man of the Match – that honour went to Kamara – he wasn’t even considered for it.

Wait, what?

Fans can vote for the ‘Budweiser Man of the Match’ through the Whitecaps’ official Twitter account. Davies’ name was noticeably absent from the list – and the team let us know why.

Because the Man of the Match award is sponsored by a beer company, only players of legal drinking age are allowed to win it. For the 17-year-old Davies, that means he’ll have to wait until November 2, 2019 for his chance.

Davies is the only player on the Whitecaps’ roster that is not of legal drinking age, as the next youngest player – David Norman Jr. – turned 19 last May.
