CTV Vancouver is being honoured for making an outstanding contribution to animals in need.
Senior digital producer Darcy Wintonyk (and casual Vancity Buzz contributor) has been unanimously awarded the 2014 award for Media Excellence by the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Darcy, loves animals, she wanted to bring the awareness to the VcB audience and has a done a wonderful job advocating for animals and also sharing the fun stories.
“It’s a pleasure to work with Darcy-she is always quick to spread the word about B.C.’s most vulnerable animals as well as how the public can help,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager, community relations, BC SPCA. “She produces accurate, balanced stories that are also engaging. She really knows how to capture viewers’ interest, presenting animal stories in a way that inspires people to take action.”
While Wintonyk knows it can be hard to hear the details of some stories, such as animal abuse cases, she says it is important they are heard so that “we, as a society, can stand up against it.”
“It’s often said that societies can be judged by how they treat their animals, and I think in B.C. that is absolutely true,” she says. “People in this province have a real empathy for animals. Just about everyone shares their home with a pet, so I think that’s why animal abuse stories hit close to home. We lover our pets so much that it’s hard to believe that someone would do something horrible to one.”
