[UPDATED] Construction worker dead after being buried by soil on Coquitlam job site

UPDATE: The BC Coroners’ Service has identified the victim as 31-year-old Eric Lee Bird, also known as Eric Starr of Vancouver. The BC Coroners’ Service, WorkSafeBC and Coquitlam RCMP are continuing to investigate.

A man has died following a construction accident in Coquitlam where he was buried by soil while working in a trench, Coquitlam Fire and Rescue has confirmed to Vancity Buzz.

Just before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, fire crews received a 9-1-1 call saying a construction worker was trapped in a trench on a job site on Hart Street in Coquitlam. The trench rescue team was deployed to the site and, in conjunction with public works equipment, they freed the man who was trapped in the trench.

By the time crews reached him, he had succumbed to his injuries.

The scene has since been turned over to the RCMP, BC Coroners’ Service and WorkSafe BC. The identity of the worker has not yet been confirmed.
