City Wants Granville Street To Become A Daytime Destination As Well

Granville Street, the re-energized entertainment strip, for better or for worse, has become the premier nightlife destination in the city. Now the city wants to explore how to make Granville Street more inviting during the day.

With the VIVA Vancouver festivals in the summer, the entertainment district is already the hub, especially from Dunsmuir to Smith Street. However, past Smith to the Granville Street Bridge, the street isn’t as inviting.

One of the things being discussed is removing parking poles and relaxing the rules surrounding patios. Removing the parking poles, would open up the sidewalk and thus allow for expanded patios.

Further, as the south end of downtown around Granville continues to densify and the Granville loops are removed, those residents will breath new life to that part of town.

A motion will be going to council today. It calls on the city to consult with the DVBIA and other stakeholders to improve Granville Street.
