Any dedicated bruncher knows there are times when there’s a need to switch things up, you know, the time you realize you’ve got to swap those flapjacks and the classic farmer’s breakfast plate for something new.

So it’s a good thing Vancouver has a great selection of international morning options you can hit, like Chicha, a little piece of Peru tucked into Vancouver’s buzzing food scene.

The aqua blue walls of this spot are as bright as the flavours presented in the modern interpretations of Peruvian classics on he menu. It’s nothing short of refreshing when you consider our usual mid-morning lineup of syrup-glazed everything and egg sandwiches smothered in ketchup.

At first glance offerings like the Aji Amarillo Seafood Chowder (seasonal and sustainable seafood, red nugget, corn, annatto seed oil) and the made-to-order Ceviche Classico (white fish, corn on the cob, yam, cilantro, red onion) may not strike you as the foods to satisfy your morning hunger, but pair them with one of Chicha’s house caesars and you’ll soon get into the coastal-vibes presented on this menu.

The menu at this spot is pretty large – you could definitely come back and tackle it a couple of times before you’ve tasted the majority of it.

Some other savoury items up for order include the Quinoa Salad (quinoa, mango, avocado, roasted red pepper, red onion, cilantro, fresh mint and jalepeno, huacatay dressing), Papas Fritas (kennebec fries with Peruvian tartar), three varieties of Huevos Benedicts made with corn cakes instead of English muffins (free range poached eggs on cassava root, zucchini, and aji amarillo hollandaise) and a Pan Con Chicharron Sandwich (pan seared crispy Two Rivers pork belly, glazed sweet yams, salsa criolla, aji amarillo chili aioli).

On the sweet side, opt for the Buttermilk and Sweet Potato Waffles with caramel sauce and a side of pork belly, or house-made Quinoa and Honey Bread and Seasonal Scones served with anise and orange scented honey and butter.
