The biggest Latin festival in the Pacific Northwest takes over Vancouver on July 9 and 10 when Carnaval del Sol returns to celebrate Latin American food, art and culture.

“Everyone is invited to Eat, Play and Live Latin America,” said Paola Murillo, Executive Director of Latincouver. “This is the biggest year yet for Carnaval del Sol, with new plazas, live performances and more to discover. Vancouver is such a diverse city, and we’re proud to contribute ourselves to the cultural mosaic.”

The free event at Concord Pacific Place features the new YVR Travel Place, with six local and six Latin American chefs teaming up for Chefs del Dol. Also new this year is an Arts place with performances and demonstrations, a Kids plaza with activities for all ages, and a Sports plaza with live soccer matches.

“We wanted to do something bigger and better than previous years,” said Natalia Parga, Project Manager for Carnaval del Sol. “There will be a Street World Cup with a match between the Latin Consulate and the City of Vancouver. We’re also interacting with attendees using the hashtags #EatCarnavalDelSol, #LiveCarnavalDelSol, and #PlayCarnavalDelSol.

“We Latinos are full of passion and love, and we’re bringing that to Vancouver and Canada.”

Carnaval del Sol is part of Latin American Week, which includes a Canada Day Parade on July 1, The Aboriginal Art Exhibition from July 4 to 8, and a Latin American Film Night on July 5.

“More and more people come each year,” said Murillo. “Carnaval del Sol drew in more than 80,000 attendees last year, and this year over 100,000 are expected. We have so many volunteers and staff and we’re excited to share what we have created as a team. It brings me a lot of joy.”
