The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed defenceman Adam Clendening to a one-year, two-way contract that pays him $760,000 at the NHL level.

Despite the fact that Clendening is on a two-way contract, he is destined for NHL duty next season, given that a demotion to Utica will require waivers.

After being acquired by Jim Benning in January, Clendening split time between Vancouver and Utica. The 22-year-old had 2 points in 17 games with the Canucks and 5 points in 11 games with the Comets. Clendening was also part of Utica’s run to the Calder Cup Final, scoring 8 points in 23 playoff games.

Clendening’s biggest asset is his shot and his offensive instincts, which could help bolster Vancouver’s power play. But first, he will need to prove that he can be an everyday NHL player. With seven other defencemen already penciled into the Canucks’ lineup, that won’t be easy.
