The Canuck Place Adventure Race takes place on September 18 at Locarno Beach. The annual event fundraises for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and sees participants kayaking, biking, and running while raising money for Canuck Place children and families across the province.
One of these fundraisers is the DOMinators. Canuck Place parent Shawn Vest teams up with his wife Hannah and sister Sabrina to race in honour of son four-year-old Dominic, who was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder at birth.
“Day-to day-life for Dominic is really tough,” explains Hannah. “We were told he wouldn’t live to see his first birthday. However, he turned four on July 19. He truly is our miracle and Shawn and I are so proud of our little boy. As he grows and gets bigger, life becomes harder for him. Since January of this year, he has required oxygen 24 hours a day. His condition really affects his respiratory system so caring for him is a 24/7 job.”
The Vest family have been using Canuck Place services since Dominic was diagnosed; while there, not only does Dominic get much-needed medical care, the entire family is taken care of. Families are provided a suite to stay in, meals are cooked for them, and recreation, play, and music therapists are all on hand to help families through trying times.
While at home, medical advice is only a phone call away, though a 24-hour care line, and entire families can attend counselling together or separately.
“Being at Canuck Place means life has dealt you a very tough hand,” said Hannah. “They are there to help you make it through your journey.”
In 2014, the DOMinators were formed to participate in the Adventure Race and give back to Canuck Place. In two years, they have raised over $14,500, and are looking to grow that total for this year’s race.
Hannah says supporting Canuck Place is imperative.
“There are so many worthy fundraisers and charities out there to donate to. Choosing to raise money or donate to Canuck Place is honestly one of the most important ones you can choose, because it touches the lives of innocent children, and the families that support their journeys, through incredibly difficult situations. We have met so many strong and amazing families, some we keep in contact with to this day, and it’s all because of Canuck Place.”
