Cannabis Day to take place in downtown Vancouver despite lack of permit

The annual July 1 Cannabis Day protest will be taking place at Thornton Park in downtown Vancouver, despite failing to obtain a permit for the event.

The Vancouver Park Board says it repeatedly asked Cannabis Day organizers to “seek a more suitable site than a park which is heavily used and adjacent to Pacific Central Station.”

However, protest organizers have decided to not change the location for the event. The Park Board says that park rangers will be monitoring the protest and Vancouver police officers will be on site as well.

The protest is being organized by Cannabis Culture, which is the same group that hosts the annual 4/20 event at Sunset Beach.

This year, the 4/20 protest forced Sunset Beach to close after the area was left in damage and disrepair.

Cannabis Culture says Cannabis Day will take place on the south side of Thornton Park between noon and 8 pm.
