As of today, Canadians can now bring small knives on flights

Starting today, Canadians will be able to bring small knives on domestic and international flights.

Earlier in November, Transport Canada announced that knives with blades 6 cm or less will be permitted on domestic and international flights.

However, knife blades of any length will be prohibited on flights to the US. Razor blades and box cutters of any size will still remain prohibited at all screening checkpoints.

The decision has been supported by the Sikh World Sikh Organization of Canada as baptized Sikhs will now be able wear kirpans (small ceremonial daggers) on flights. Kirpans are one of the five religious articles of the Sikh faith.

However, Quebec politicians have spoken out about the new ruling and passed a motion on November 22 calling on the federal government to review the decision.

Transport Canada also announced that starting November 27, the following powders and granular material with a volume of 350 ml will be prohibited from flights:

  • Bath salts
  • Sea salt
  • Baby powder
  • Foot powder
  • Cooking powder
  • Sand

Items such as baby formula, protein powder, tea and coffee will still be permitted in any quantity.
