One quarter of Canadian Millennials would give up their cellphone to travel

Q: What is the ultimate Millennial dilemma?
A: Phone vs. travel.

Do we want to explore the world or do we want to ‘gram it?!

According to a recent study by tour company Contiki, 25% of Canadian Millennials would give up their cell phone and internet in order to travel for free for a year.

This means not only can you not post Insta Stories in real time, but you can’t even post throwbacks of your trip until a whole year. Just want to make sure the severity of this is understood.

Contiki takes 18 to 35-year-olds on epic trips across the globe, showing young adventurous travellers that there is, in fact, more to life than Instagram and Netflix.

They have surveyed respondents from across the country, including those who have travelled and those who haven’t, to uncover the driving force behind young Canadians’ travel habits.

Here are some of their other findings.

When asked what they would sacrifice in exchange for an all-expense-paid trip around the world, the survey says:

  • 72% would give up dating apps (who needs Tinder when your travel soulmate awaits?)
  • 71% would stop buying “new and shiny things,” ie. clothing and electronics
  • 70% would give up Tim Hortons
  • 68% would stop watching hockey
  • 61% would stay sober for a year (that means no buckets in Thailand. Have they thought this through?)
  • 55% would give up coffee
  • 38% would give up their current job or schooling program
  • 36% would give up carbs (they may want to leave Italy out of their itinerary)

When asked about their deciding factors when booking a trip, the survey says:

  • 51% listed their top deciding factor as looking for new experiences
  • 40% are out to experience the local culture of the destination they’re visiting
  • 33% are bonafide adventure junkies. Paragliding, trekking, zip lining, you name it, these peeps are after it.
  • 31% travel for food. We respect this immensely.

When asked about their biggest regrets of 2018, the survey says:

  • Nearly half said “not travelling enough” was their biggest regret of the year
  • 35% said their biggest regret was spending too much money on things they don’t need (aka things that aren’t travel, IMO)
  • 11% fully admitted to their dating choices as their #1 regret of 2018. Gotta kiss a few frogs, are we right or are we right?!

You live and you learn folks, 2019 is your year to live by Contiki’s motto of #NoRegrets!
