Picture this… it’s exam season, you’re tired, you’ve been studying for the last week, your body is weakened from only consuming packets of noodles in your dorm room.
You can find refuge and home-cooked goodness within the walls of Calhoun’s on Broadway.
Housing a coffee shop as well as a deli style cafe, Calhoun’s offers up espresso drinks and gourmet food in an environment that facilitates students. With their bountiful small tables scattered across the room, giant windows, free WiFi (with purchase) and accessible electrical outlets, you would think they planned this spot with students in mind.
The food is good, well planned dishes such as shepherds pie and chicken curry are warmed upon ordering and can be easily packed to go. Their wraps and quesadillas are grilled to order and arrive at your table with salsa and sour cream. Not fancy foods mind you, but the price isn’t fancy either. For $10, you can have a full belly and some serious brain food.
I decided to try the Chicken Curry and my partner in crime decided to have the Chicken Wrap. The curry was homey and flavorful without being overly spicy. Mild coconut milk and curry sauce with strips of grilled chicken mingle with the chunks of mango perched atop the bowl. This bowl conquered me, it was huge. The portion sizes are great, especially if you are like me and often take leftovers. Two meals for $10… yes please!
The chicken wrap, although substantially less flavorful than the curry, was also good. In my opinion it needs sriracha sauce or a little bit more of a kick, but otherwise filling and tasty.
Whilst sipping a London Fog, I indulged in a chocolate caramel cookie. Before even taking a bite I could smell that unmistakable aroma of home made caramel oozing with butter. the cookies are a great combo with your coffee and the vegan apricot one, although a little dry, was also tasty.
A treat to finish your meal could easily be their tiramisu, rich creamy with just a hint of rum. Definitely one of the best I have ever had.
Overall, Calhoun’s has a homey warm feel combined with decent pricing and tasty eats.
