The fire that has consumed nearly 80 hectares of Burns Bog is 100% contained, according to the City of Delta.

The city was given the go-ahead by the Ministry of Transportation to reopen Highway 17 as a result of the full containment of the fire.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire had been 50% contained.

“The decision to close any street or evacuate a business is never made lightly and we fully appreciate the impact on the traveling public and all those impacted,” says Delta mayor Lois Jackson in a media release. “However, these strategic closures were key in the quick containment of the fire and ensuring that the fire did not impact Tilbury Industrial Park, any other critical infrastructure, and that all of our First Responders were able to do their jobs safely and efficiently.”

The Tilbury Industrial Park was previously evacuated.

Firefighters continue to be on site to battle the blaze, although now that it’s contained, those numbers have been reduced.
