The Burnaby RCMP have nabbed an alleged thief thanks to the owner of the vehicle who helped track it down using GPS.

On Friday, June 1, Burnaby RCMP received a report of a stolen work truck that was being tracked by the owner via a GPS device in the vehicle.

The business owner got in touch with police and informed them of the truck’s GPS coordinates, allowing authorities to track the vehicle to a parking lot in the  6500-block of Hastings Street.

Police arrested a 35-year-old Vancouver Island man on the scene without incident. The man is facing charges related to the theft.

“In this instance, an alert business owner who knew how to access GPS data from his work vehicle assisted police in retrieving his truck,” said Burnaby RCMP in a release.

“Police are asking that if you use security tools such as GPS or security cameras that you ensure software is kept up to date and that you know how to retrieve data from these tools.”
