The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team has recently recovered the body of a man who drowned at Buntzen Lake.

The man, who was identified later as a 47-year-old from Burnaby, disappeared under the surface of the water at approximately 4 pm, yesterday evening.

According to police reports, the man was a “non-swimmer” and was in the water with his family on Tuesday, August 14, 2018.

The lake was closed for a period of time as the Underwater Recovery Team began their recovery mission.

Our Victim Services are doing all they can to help to help the family through this heartbreaking time, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP. We encourage everyone to use their best judgement and strongly assess their swimming level whenever they enter the water.

According to RCMP, although Buntzen Lake acts as a great spot to cool off, “it has steep drop-offs just metres from the shoreline.”

Approximately one month ago, a 19-year-old also drowned in the same location.
