On November 19, Bing Thom Architects will be hosting a Community Social to explore the future of the “Safeway site” with the Grandview Woodland neighborhood.
Home to the neighbourhood’s only full-service grocery store and located at the southeast corner of Broadway and Commercial Drive, the Safeway site is a vital part of the Grandview Woodland neighbourhood. Given its proximity to Metro Vancouver’s busiest transit hub, the property’s redevelopment presents an important opportunity for the community and the city.
Internationally renowned local architecture firm, Bing Thom Architects, has been engaged to develop the concept for this property. Locally, Bing Thom Architects is best known for the design of the SFU Surrey Library and the Chan Centre at UBC. The firm has a longstanding commitment to social sustainability, which has prompted a renewed interest in residential projects in recent years.
For the Grandview Woodlands neighbourhood, Bing Thom Architects envision a new urban typology focused on family housing. They imagine an innovative community-based approach that leverages outdoor green space, encourages neighbourliness, and creates connectivity to the surrounding area. Initial ideas for the property will be shared at the Community Social planned for November 19.
