A black bear was killed early this morning after it was hit by the driver of an SUV that then fled the scene in North Vancouver.

Corporal Richard De Jong tells Daily Hive that the North Vancouver RCMP responded to calls of a dead bear in the 1800 block of Berkley Road at around 2:15 am.

He says the bear was hit by a grey or silver SUV that was last seen travelling south down Berkley Road. The District of North Vancouver was tasked with cleaning up the bear’s remains.

De Jong says they’re still trying to track down the driver of the SUV, and he notes that the vehicle could have significant front end damage from the crash.

“If they go to ICBC and they file a claim, they’re going to have some explaining to do,” he says.

He says the bear was probably young, since it was on the smaller side.

As far as laws that pertain to hitting wild animals with vehicles, De Jong notes it’s a bit of a grey area.

“You are required by law to report all motor vehicle accidents, so in this case where an animal has been destroyed, they have 24 hours to report it to the police and again, we’d be looking into reasons why they didn’t stay at the scene.”

De Jong says anyone with information should call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
