The first ever Bike To Shop Day hits Vancouver this Saturday, offering shoppers the chance to win a getaway for two to the Okanagan and get discounts at their favourite stores.
Drawing on the success of 10 years of Bike to Work Week events, HUB Cycling will be setting up celebration stations, offering snacks, drinks and bike tips for shoppers.
Riders will be able to get a free tune up from mechanics and advice on how to carry shopping by bike, as well as store discounts just by arriving on a bike.
“Most of the errands we run in a day – whether to go out for dinner, or to pick-up a few groceries, for example – can be easily be done by bike”, said coordinator Mathieu Beaudoin in a release. “I actually have a cargo bike that I use to transport my kids and shopping items.”
Bike to Shop Day is being sponsored by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, the Hastings Cross Business Improvement Association, the Gastown Business Improvement Association and the City of Vancouver.
It is also being funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia Job Creation Partnership program.
