With spring comes the sunshine, the blooming flowers, and a sense of fresh renewal. So now that you’ve tossed aside your winter coat for the time being, it’s time to work some fresh dining options into your routine.
There have been several exciting new openings over the past few months. Maybe you’ve already tried the Canadian comfort fare at Timber, the gorgeous salads at Field & Social, chic Thai eats at Pink Elephant’s Marine Gateway outpost, fried chicken ramen at Ramen Gojiro, Texas-style BBQ at Dixie’s, or the tacos at La Catrina, but are still hungry for something you haven’t had in the city yet.
Here are five new Vancouver restaurants to try right now:
Pho Hoang on Main may be no more, but the legacy lives on, and gets a modern update, thanks to Vincent and Amelie Nguyen (kids of the original Pho Hoang owners), who have opened Anh + Chi in the same space, but with a new look and new dishes. Look for a menu well-flavoured regional staples found on the streets of Vietnam at this chic restaurant that’s already drawing raves.

Just opened in mid-April, Jam Cafe has a fun menu of inventive breakfast fare, like Pulled Pork Pancakes, Fried Chicken Eggs Benny, stuffed french toast plates, massive breakfast bowls, and a ton more. Ideal for casual morning meet-ups, cheat day weekday breakfast, hangover eats, laid back lunching, or weekend brunch, odds are high Vancouver’s Jam Cafe will draw lines to rival those found at its original Victoria location, since they seem to have found a terrific recipe for great food in a comfy space.

Taking its name from the Hawaiian word for delicious ‘ONO Raw Bar offers an extensive selection of fresh fish flown in daily from the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. In addition to à la carte options like sushi rolls, nigiri, carpaccio, and skewers, Omakase (the Japanese equivalent of a chef’s tasting menu) is also available.

This one is a restaurant on wheels, so you’ll have to get mobile and track them down, until they settle into their permanent spot at 884 Cordova on April 25. With a menu dedicated to comforting vegetarian eats and Israeli staples, customers who visit Chickpea will find–you guessed it–freshly made falafel (ordered in a pita or as part of a platter), hummus, shakshuka (a tangy tomato and egg dish), and sabich (eggplant sandwich), among other dishes.
This is the first location of Japanese import Pepper Lunch located in the City of Vancouver; the first one in the Metro area hit Richmond in 2015. The counter-service eatery has customers ordering their desired meat and/or veggie with brown or white rice or pasta, then heading to their tables. Then their “sizzle plates” are brought over, and diners finish up the cooking to taste.

There’s plenty more to look forward to in the coming months, too, like David Hawksworth’s Nightingale, a build-your-own poke bowl spot on Main Street, Kissa Tanto from the team at Bao Bei, two TAPShack locations replacing Mill Marine Bistro and the Pirate Pub, and the Fanny Bay Oyster Bar–just to name a few.
