Ice Cream Sundaes are a beloved childhood treat most of us grew up loving. What’s better than scoops of ice cream topped with sauces and other yummy toppings?

These seven Vancouver shops will entice sundae lovers of all ages with their sophisticated takes on this classic cold dessert.

1. Earnest Ice Cream

You cannot deny that Earnest knows how to churn some seriously good ice cream, but often unknown to many are their seasonal sundaes. Currently at their two scoop shops, Earnest is serving a lovely Lemon Tart inspired sundae that consists of house made lemon curd drizzled over their classic Tahitian vanilla ice cream, garnished with lemon infused whipped cream and house made pie crust pieces. Their sundae flavours  are announced on social media and past sundae flavours include a Caramel Walnut Crunch, Peanut Coffee Crunch and Candy Cane Crackle.

2. Soft Peaks

Located in the heart of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, Gastown, Soft Peaks churns organic Avalon milk into their signature creamy soft serve. The milky soft serve lends itself as the perfect base for sweet toppings, syrups and sauces such as fresh honeycomb from the Okanogan and Fraser Valley or locally grown organic berry compote. For more unique flavours, try a dusting of matcha with red beans or some tangy marmalade made from yuzu. The best part, all of the sundaes can be ordered in a waffle cone.

3. Glenburn Soda Fountain and Confectionary

Situated in Burnaby Heights, Glenburn Soda Fountain and Confectionary is a fun throwback to the 1940s and pays homage to Glenburn Dairy farm which also once operated in the area. Their extensive sundae menu focuses on classic flavours with a slight twist like the Banoffee Split which is a scoop of vanilla and coffee crunch ice cream, a split banana and smothered in hot fudge and butterscotch, garnished with whipped cream and toffee chips. With so many flavours to choose from, it can be quite difficult, but thankfully there is the Glenburn Sampler that is three scoops of ice cream topped off with hot fudge, peanut butter and butterscotch sauces.

4. Beta5 Chocolates

Hidden amongst the industrial buildings near Science World, this award-winning chocolatier scoops out several different ice cream sundaes during their Ice Cream Socials. Beta5 sundaes generally feature both a scoop of ice cream and a sorbet, garnished with three to five different toppings. Past flavours include the Mango Bubble Tea and Strawberry Olive Oil. The downside is that each flavour is only available for the one day and one day only, so if there is a flavour you have been dying to try, you better hustle before it sells out.

5. Mister

Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but Yaletown’s Mister has two ice cream flavours on their menu that are served with a topping and it would be unfair not to mention them. Their signature flavour, the Creme Brûlée, begins with a delicious vanilla bean custard base topped with bruléed white sugar. The burnt flavour of the sugar with the frozen custard ice cream is a fabulous take on the classic french dessert. The S’mores Sundae will give you all the campfire feels without the sleeping outdoors with its rich chocolate ice cream that has graham cracker bits speckled throughout and garnished with a dollop of marshmallow cream that has been charred to perfection.

Who said Taco Tuesdays can’t be sweet? Rain or Shine serves up their ice cream sundaes in waffle cone taco shells once a week for Taco Tuesday. Create your perfect sundae with 2 scoops of their 100% dairy no egg ice cream flavours and two toppings which is then finished with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry on top. Of course, sundaes are available all through the week, but you will be missing out on the awesome taco cone.
