The BC Lions have locked up their most important player to a contract extension, inking Jonathon Jennings through the 2018 season.

The Lions’ 23-year-old quarterback showed well in his first CFL season and will enter his second season as the team’s starter.

“The commitment that the BC Lions have made to Jonathon with this extension allows him to come to training camp and focus on football,” said GM and head coach Wally Buono in a team-released statement. “We owe it to our fans to put an exciting product on the field and having Jonathon sign an extension assures that moving forward. I am very excited about our quarterback depth going into the 2016 season.”

Jennings entered last season as the Lions’ third-string quarterback, playing behind veterans Travis Lulay and John Beck. He first saw action in Calgary on September 18, after both veteran QBs fell to injury.

Jennings started six games, winning three of them, while completing 66% of his passes for 2,004 yards and 15 touchdowns.

In a down season, Jennings reinvigorated the fanbase.

“This is a very exciting day for me and I’m both grateful and incredibly honoured to be a BC Lion,” said Jennings. “We have an opportunity for great things this season and I can’t wait to get back to work with Travis, Khari Jones and everyone on the offence.”
