A Toronto-based company has come up with a new hospitality concept that marries hotel accommodations with autonomous travel together to create a so-called “autonomous travel suite.”

Aprilli Design Studio’s provides mobile hotel rooms that double as a personal electric vehicle with autonomous driving technology to seamlessly take travellers to destinations. This mobile suite includes a bed, working area, and washroom facilities to allow users to travel more efficiently and productively.

Through an app, travellers can specify their destinations, automatically control indoor environments, and monitor the performance and status of their vehicle.

All of this would be operated by an autonomous hotel chain with a network of hotel facilities offering stationary parent units and public amenities, such as food and beverage, meeting room, spa, pool, and gym.

For mobile units that are out of these facilities, service vehicles can be dispatched to the mobile units to provide fresh batteries or room service.

According to the designers, such a concept could disrupt the hospitality, air travel, and vehicle rental industries by providing a lower-cost, comfortable option for accommodations and transportation between cities and destinations.

The mobile hotel rooms combine the cost of local transportation — taxi or rental car — as well as domestic flights, long-haul train trips, and hotels. This could make such a concept a more competitive option compared to domestic flights or train travels, especially if there is more than one person traveling.

“Autonomous Travel Suite is a new form of hospitality merging transportation and hotel into one form, offering flexible travel schedules, lower costs, privacy, and, above all, comfort,” reads Aprilli Design Studio’s description of their new concept.

“Compared to domestic flights or train travels that require multiple steps of transfers and check-ins throughout the travel, Autonomous Travel Suite operates as your personal rental car and hotel room, providing unlimited flexibility and mobility at a cheaper cost.”

Aprilli Design Studio won the 2018 Radical Innovation Award for its conceptual design for an autonomous mobile hotel and the new form of hospitality.
