The Australian Rules Football Canadian National Championships are coming to Burnaby! Burnaby Lakes Rugby Fields will host the Canadian championship of Australia’s national sport May 21-22.

This is the first edition of the Australian Rules Football Canadian National Championships – yes, I know the name is a mouthful – and has me intrigued.

‘Aussie Rules’ is a massively popular sport in Australia. Nearly 100,000 spectators show up for the AFL Grand Final, Australia’s answer for the Super Bowl.

No, Aussie Rules isn’t a version of rugby. Yes, there are rules to Aussie Rules.

The sport is one of the most exciting, physical, and high scoring sports in the world. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll love it.

Four men’s teams and four women’s teams from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, and Eastern Canada will compete in the Burnaby tournament.

Tournament organizers describe Aussie Rules as one of Canada’s fastest growing sports.

“Not only will we witness some intense rivalries between provinces, the Canadian national team selection committee will be in force scouting players to represent Canada at the next International Cup in Australia,” said B.C. Australian Rules Football league President and National Team Assistant Coach Adam Kelly.

Yes, there is a Canadian Aussie Rules National Team.

There is also a domestic league where teams like the Burnaby Eagles, Calgary Kangaroos, and Toronto Dingos play.

Tournament games will be played from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21-22 at Burnaby Lakes Rugby Fields – 3760 Sperling Ave, Burnaby, BC.
