The famous A-maze-ing Laughter statues at the intersection of Davie Street and Denman Street at English Bay have received a temporary addition that will last throughout the weekend. We’re talking about lifejackets.

It is all part of a campaign by The Community Against Preventable Injuries to raise awareness about drowning, as an average of 53 deaths in BC every year are from drowning incidents.

(The Community Against Preventable Injuries)

Data from the organization indicates the greatest number of drowning deaths occur among males, with 46% in natural water and 28% on water transport.

And approximately 60% of drowning deaths among children occur in natural waters during swimming or water transport-related activities like boating and jet skiing.

Preventable’s safety tips to prevent drowning

  1. Ensure everyone is wearing a personal floatation device or lifejacket while on a boat, at the beach, or at the lake.
  2. Be cautious and know what to do if you get into trouble when swimming in currents.
  3. Alcohol should not be consumed before or during swimming or boating activities.
  4. When hiking, be mindful of staying on the trails and avoid fast-flowing rivers.
  5. Be the child’s lifeguard: Make sure children are well supervised by responsible adults at all times in and around water.
  6. Enroll yourself and your child in swimming lessons or take a class on CPR and lifesaving techniques.
