Investigations underway into death of young B.C. Aboriginal woman

Investigations are under way into the death of another young woman, who had aged out of government care.

The BC Coroners Service and police still haven’t completed their investigations, but the initial details are alarmingly familiar.

CKNW has learned a young Aboriginal woman,“had been involved with M.C.F.D.,” is dead from a suspected drug overdose.

In a statement, BC’s Child and Youth Representative says the young woman “was trying to navigate the system of youth support.”

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says the case once again reminds her “of the frailty of the lives of some young people in the province…especially Aboriginal youth as they make the transition from child welfare to adulthood.”

Turpel-Lafond’s office says it is gathering information on this case, but is waiting for the coroner and police to finish their investigations.

For now, they are offering support to the young woman’s family and friends.
