The North Vancouver RCMP is investigating a serious incident that occurred in the lower Ridgeway area of North Vancouver.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, an unknown male entered a single family residence occupied by a lone elderly female. The woman was sexually assaulted.

The victim was in her mid-80s and taken to hospital for an examination. She is presently being supported by family members and Victim Services.

This investigation is in its early stages with many of the details of the incident remaining unclear and being considered, explained Cpl Richard De Jong, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP.

It is unclear how the suspect gained access to the residence, or if this was a targeted or random incident. This is an extremely unusual and highly concerning incident, stated Cpl De Jong. Police are taking this investigation very seriously and have a number of investigators actively working on the case.

As the warmer weather is upon us, police remind citizens to be extra vigilant in securing doors and windows at all times.

Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file #2014-13605.  You can also report information anonymously through BC Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
