It’s a whole new world. Today’s leading ladies of jazz are leading the charge in technical expertise, unabashed passion and musical innovation. The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival has always had a long tradition in presenting strong female artists, and this year is no exception.

Here are our picks for awesome women who continue to redefine the jazz genre and beyond. Catch them live this summer at the Jazz Fest!

Christine and Ingrid Jensen

When: Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m.

Music does run in the family. Christine Jensen is a two-time JUNO winner and one of the rising stars of the revitalized Big Band genre. She’s also an accomplished composer and saxophonist. For Jazz Fest, Jensen has assembled a 20-piece ensemble, featuring none other than her sister Ingrid on an eclectic mix of trumpet and electronics. This is ground-breaking stuff: as Downbeat Magazine proclaims, “…big band cliches are avoided, but beauty is paramount.”

Skonberg now lives in Brooklyn, New York but originally grew up in Chilliwack. She honed her skills at the world-famous music program at Capilano University. Skonberg has since become an adept trumpet player and a stunning vocalist, combining both into original compositions entirely her own. Skonberg’s received plenty of awards and recognition since moving to the states, but coming home to Vancouver during the Jazz Festival must be especially poignant. She’s backed up by Evan Arntzen saxophone/clarinet, Sean Cronin bass, Dalton Ridenhour piano, Darrian Douglas drums; the quintet will be playing Skonberg’s recent work focused on a blend of soul, world beat, and even electronica.

Guillou is no stranger to the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and returns triumphantly with new songs from her most recent live album, Winter For Beginners. The jazz vocalist has a bakground in musical theatre, and her live shows are always a blast. Electro-pop, soul, dance and world beat: not many can combine it all the way Zaki Ibrahim does. The Canadian-born, South African singer/songwriter is a special feature for Jazz Festival’s South Africa Now! series, which shows off the diversity and innovation of international artists like Ibrahim. Led by Ibrahim and her band at David Lam Park, it’s going to be one massive outdoor party. Be there.
