An estimated 30,000 gathered around the Vancouver Art Gallery today for the 20th annual 420 Smoke Out.

The political event, which doubles as a free-flowing cannabis marketplace and a mass recreational consumption, is part of the continued push to legalize marijuana in British Columbia. Despite last year’s failed Sensible BC campaign to put marijuana laws to a vote, 420 continues to grow even larger as a symbol of the movement for legalization.

By 4:20 p.m. on the 20th day of the fourth month, a smoky haze hovered over the City Centre where masses had converged. A countdown from 20, led by pot activist Jodie Emergy, concluded with boisterous cheering as crowds lit up their pot and took puffs.

Marijuana was not only being sold to be smoked, but also in the forms of various pastries (brownies, cookies), lolipops and oil. Later on in the event, free pizza was given out to quell the munchies.

420 Vancouver has grown exponentially ever since its inaugural year at Victory Square. However, next year’s event remains uncertain – a new location is needed as 420 has outgrown the public space surrounding the Vancouver Art Gallery, which includes Robson Square, a closure of Howe Street, and the plaza facing West Georgia Street.

More importantly, the plaza on West Georgia will be closed for extensive renovations and an aesthetic makeover.
