Do you pine for your elementary school days when life was simpler? Well, prepare yourself for the ultimate throwback – a 216 foot-long hopscotch is coming to New Westminster.
The River Market at the New Westminster Quay will be introducing the hopscotch designed by illustrator Jane Woo on Thursday, March 17. While a world record has been set for the longest outdoor hopscotch – it was 5.5 kilometres long – no such record exists for the longest indoor hopscotch, and the team hopes to set it.
“The purpose is to showcase a snapshot of what makes New Westminster unique. It started with researching all of the neighbourhoods, speaking with residents who live in those areas, and eventually collecting a selection of facts, anecdotes, and visuals that can capture a neighbourhood in a fun and unique way,” says River Market’s marketing manager Salim Hassan.
The last public art installation the River Market had was all about LEGO, so they decided to keep the childhood theme with this newest display.
“The great thing about hopscotch is the ability to play the game anywhere. All you really need is a piece of chalk, a surface, and imagination,” says Hassan.
