On June 2, 2013, children, along with runners and walkers of all ages, will take to the scenic trails of Queen Elizabeth Park for a 5 km route or 1 km Fun Run as part of the 28th Annual ChildRun. As the largest family fun run in Vancouver, ChildRun, which joins forces with Lululemon founder Chip Wilson and his family, inspires participants to raise funds for childhood cancer research and treatment areas at BC Children’s Hospital.

All of all donations raised at the 2012 ChildRun went directly towards pediatric oncology research and treatment areas at BC Children’s Hospital. Moreover, thanks to wonderful 2012 sponsors whose generous support helped underwrite the event costs, even more of the proceeds were directed back to the hospital.

Funds raised at the 2012 ChildRun went to support the Oncology Program at BC Children’s Hospital in two distinct ways:

Research

A portion of the funds will go toward research to find better ways to treat and cure children with cancer. Dr. Kirk Schultz, a world-renowned researcher-clinician and director of the Childhood Cancer & Blood Research team in the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Children’s Hospital, is evaluating a new immune therapy for leukemia based on the work of his clinical teams at Children’s Hospital and the research institute. He is one of the many accomplished investigators at our facility working to save more lives by improving cancer care and treatment for children.

The Future of Oncology Treatment

The remaining funds will go toward the future cancer treatment centre in the new BC Children’s Hospital. Our Oncology Program’s inpatient unit and outpatient clinics are currently spread across three floors of BC Children’s Hospital. The plan for the new hospital is to bring these treatment areas onto one floor to create a cohesive and collaborative medical environment in which to treat children with cancer and to help prevent complications in those who are immune-compromised as a result of treatment. A floor dedicated to childhood cancer and blood disorders will ensure children and youth continue to receive the highest quality care in an environment designed to meet the specific health-care needs of children and families dealing with childhood cancer.
