Update: The two pedestrians struck by the vehicle in Coquitlam this afternoon have succumbed to their injuries and died.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. today, a grey truck was turning on to Austin Avenue from Gatensbury Street when it collided with two pedestrians. After the collision, the truck driver allegedly did not stay at the scene and fled the area. The pedestrians did not survive their injuries and died on scene.

We need to speak to witnesses. If you witnessed the crash and have not spoken to a police officer, call us, said Corporal Jamie Chung.

The collision is being investigated by the Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services with the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service. Austin Avenue between Schoolhouse Street and Marmont Street is closed until further notice. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as Brunette or Foster Avenue.

Witnesses are urged to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2013-34951.
