Metro Vancouver’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) have identified 17-year-old Jaylen Sandhu as the deceased victim of a daylight assault in Surrey on Thursday.

At 2 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a reported incident in the 16300 block of 88 Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Sandhu with multiple stab wounds and he was rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his critical injuries.

Police say the suspect knew the victim and is still at large. Holy Cross High School, just one block away from the crime scene, was locked down for approximately half an hour while police looked for the suspect.

IHIT has taken over the investigation from the RCMP – no other information has been made available as the investigation is still in its early stages.

This is Surrey’s third homicide in eight days, all involving victims under the age of 18, and the seventeenth homicide this year – the fourth highest in Surrey’s history.

On December 10, the body of eight-year-old Teagan Batstone was found in the trunk of her car. Her mother, Lisa, was arrested and charged with second degree murder shortly after the discovery.

This was followed by the fatal attack on 15-year-old Dario Bartoli on December 13 when he was swarmed by a group of young people at a park.
