10 Vancouver comedy events to check out in June

After a long day in the office or on the beach, there’s no better way to unwind than by catching one of the stand-up, improv, and variety shows around Vancouver. Here are 10 great comedy events taking place around the city this month.

Writer, director, comedian, and all-around entertainer Marlon Wayans comes to the Vogue Theatre on Saturday, June 4. Touring the United States with one night in Vancouver on his Scandal-less Tour, Wayans has appeared on In Living Colour, the Scary Movie franchise, and most recently Fifty Shades of Black.

Tinder Tales

Matterhorn Improv with Sophie Buddle and Chris and Travis

Matterhorn is the comedy combo of Andrew Barber, Cam Macleod, Scott Patey and Brian Cook, and they’ve performed at Vancouver International Improv Festival and ImproOlympia Festival. On June 7, they’re joined by stand-up sensation Sophie Buddle and Fringe favourites Chris and Travis.

Instant Theatre’s House Party and Reunion

House Party features an improv lottery where improvisers and audience members perform together in the first half of the show. Then a classic Instant Theatre ensemble from a past Conservatory jam together with one of their favourite forms.

DeAnne Smith has performed all over the world, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Iceland Comedy Festival and Just for Laughs Montreal. She’s also been on TV in four countries, including Last Comic Standing NBC, The Late Late Show CBS, Canada’s The Comedy Network, Australia’s Channel 10 and ABC, and UK’s Sky TV.

Lori Ferguson-Ford has performed stand-up for over 20 years, and has been voted B.C.’s Funniest New Comic and B.C.’s Funniest Woman. She has toured all over North America, with stops at The Improv, The Laugh Factory and the Comedy Store. Lori’s has also appeared on CTV, CBC, The Comedy Network, and CBC radio’s Madly Off In All Directions.

BroadWHAT?! A Revolutionary Improvised Musical

No script? No score? No problem! Off Key Improv presents BroadWHAT?!, a journey into the world of Broadway musicals. Set at the turn of the 19th century and inspired by audience suggestions, BroadWHAT?! is a two act improvised musical exploring classic character-types, songs styles and choreography from favourite musical theatre hits like Les Misérables, Hamilton, Wicked, Grease and more.

Atomic Vaudeville presents: Camp Cry Baby

Atomic Vaudeville’s Cabaret Series combines the edgy humour of Saturday Night Live, the topical brilliance of Jon Stewart and the musical flair of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The theatre company is bringing the cabaret series to Vancouver, and will be joined onstage by Katie-Ellen Humprhies, Omari Newton, Jeff Gladstone, Tara Travis, and more.

Improv Against Humanity: Summer Lovin’

Using audience suggestions to fuel scenes, teams must create totally improvised situations on the spot. TheatreSports is high-action short form improv full of comic vengeance.
