Environment Canada issues weather advisory for City of Toronto

Sep 7 2017, 11:01 pm

Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for the City of Toronto today.

The advisory includes everything from the possible development of funnel clouds to thunderstorms and dime-sized hail.

In other words, it’s going to be a rough day of Toronto weather.

Rain has already begun pouring down in the city as of 12 pm, but Environment Canada is predicting any thunderstorms will dissipate by this evening. However, the risk of a tornado is not out of the question:

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

Nearly all of Southern Ontario is currently under a weather advisory:

Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and early evening across Southern Ontario.

Some of the thunderstorms will bring dime sized hail, wind gusts to 70 km/h and frequent lightning.

Funnel clouds may also make a brief appearance this afternoon in this unseasonably cool and unstable air mass.

Thunderstorms are expected to dissipate this evening.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
