Downtown Toronto streets are turning into 'paved parks' this weekend

Downtown streets are being turned into ‘paved parks’ for the public to enjoy this weekend.

That’s right Open Streets TO returns to the city again this Sunday, for a car-free afternoon of fun.

Taking place on Sunday, September, 16, this family-friendly event is bringing back the largest free recreation program in Canada and will be shutting down parts of Toronto’s Bloor Street and Yonge Street to host the festivities.

Open Streets programs, also known as Ciclovias, open busy streets to the public and close them to cars encouraging participation in physical activity and healthy recreation.

They are free, regularly occurring programs, and offer communities the opportunity to experience their city streets in a whole new way.

This weekend, participants can look forward to endless activities including exercise and dance classes, art installations, sample stations, musical performances, street games, water stations, obstacle courses, neighbourhood tours and more.

As in previous years, Activity Hubs will be set up by local businesses and community organizations along the route, showcasing the character of each neighbourhood in authentic ways.
